Autism is a developmental disability that stems from a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain. Children with autism often can't make connections that others make easily. They also may react to what's going on around them in unusual ways.

The question of what causes autism is highly controversial, and no one knows the answer for sure yet.
